June 2010 ~ A Reason To Celebrate

Jun 30, 2010

So many of us are caught up in our own worlds painted with dramas, disease, frustrations and heartache and it may seem that we don’t get very far along the road to what we call success. We hear what success should be, it could be, and probably will be but in these challenging times it may be easier to see the smoke that blinds us to where our true passions are birthed ~ in the flames of our heart and soul.

As I grow older, in the terms of years and more gray hairs, I see so many people trapped in the corners of their lives because of a life tragedy or events that have occurred. Because of my own personal experiences with illness, deaths, layoffs, endings and new beginnings I can relate to several situations and, over time, I have applied a little more of the guidance that I receive in my own life lessons. I have had many teachers who have attempted and perhaps somewhat succeeded to show me two truths about myself: 1) I am a child of God and, 2) I am still human. Perhaps this life is a double edged sword for many of us who are struggling with the day to day mundane issues that consume much of our waking hours and sleepless nights.

Being a child of God means, in my opinion, that I will have many opportunities to reveal and share my spiritual aspects of being the genuine soul I was destined to know. And, while I am going through this life there is another alter “ego” that I believe is the part I have come to know as being human in every way, shape and form. The soul and the ego are somehow engaged during this lifetime in a dance, entangled in a web, and for some, they are at war within themselves. Wherever you may be in this moment or lifetime there is a reason you have come to this point, to this crossing, and maybe a bridge is just ahead of you in your experience(s). Whether it be because of the scenery, a decision, or glimpse of eternity or mortality we have so much to learn from each other…to share with each other if we would only live more through our souls and less through our egos.

One of my favorite quotes from the Bible is in II Corinthians IV where it simply states that our bodies, this earthen vessel, carries a treasure. Do you believe this to be true in your life or are you carelessly wasting away your life apathetically and caring for no one other than yourself. Be honest with yourself, as you should know yourself best if you spend any quality time in your thoughts and observing and reflecting upon your actions, whether current, past or present. Funny how time flies by so quickly when we are busy with our busy lives and frantically running on the hamster wheel with little thought. We become numb to ourselves, our lives, our hearts, and our souls for this is the way of the ego. We may find that our friends are those who are chasing their tails, their own masters, at their own pace. Though they may be busy living their lives and seeming happy with plans and trips and their so called friends I would suggest taking another look, more closely, to find your true reason for being here, in this moment, on the earth. There are over six billion people on this planet and somehow we don’t even know who our neighbors are who live closer to us than our closest friends, siblings, parents and children do. We can spend hours a day on the phone with them but I find it interesting that so many of us live apart from the ones we “love” and live the closest to the ones we don’t “love” or even know. No wonder we don’t feel a sense of community, for the most part.

Does this give us a sense of peace and joy to be so far apart from each other when times are difficult? When it is not possible to be there in an hour ~ to give your old friend a bear hug to let her know that everything is going to work out just fine. I think we can all become better friends to one another regardless of what our relationship is to each other—whether near or far, neighbor or family, black or white, we are in this experience together, once and for all, and it is time that we come together and join forces. Yes, I have written something similar to this before and I want to again identify the significance of what being a successful human living soul may begin to realize while on this earth a few short years.

There are many people that would trade places with you, believe it or not. No matter what your situation, it can be either turned around or you can change your mind as to how the rest of your life will be spent. Some people think that they will live to 100 years old and they don’t make it. Some people think they are dying because they have been given a date by a medical professional and for some “unknown” reason they live beyond that time frame or go into remission. We may not know the exact time and date of our lives but I believe that we live and die not only once in a lifetime but, as nature intends it, we should live and die in almost every moment. Just as we inhale and exhale with every breath we take so should let go of the thoughts that no longer serve us, our pasts that no longer own us, our mistakes that have been forgiven should be forgotten. Our hearts will remain open when our emotions no longer possess us to impose and deliver a sentence of judgment upon ourselves or onto others.

Today is a new day for each one of us. You are alive and though life may have taken a turn since yesterday you have another day to live so why not celebrate? There will always be another person who would trade places with you and walk in your footsteps. There are people who have terminal illnesses who would hope to have the struggles you are wrestling with at this point because they would have the ability to focus on what may be important and what may not be as important as it once seemed. There is someone who would give anything to look into the eyes of their child once more if only…they had one more day. Clarity seems to come at a cost so now the question is “did you get what you paid so dearly for?”

Today is a day to celebrate my life and I have every reason to believe and take hold of the gift that was given to me today—whether I am in pain or in praise, alone or fulfilled. Celebrate a day in your life everyday not just on certain dates of the year or on special occasions. Just because it is a celebration of a life…a gift of life. For however long I may continue to have it I will treasure it as it is fragile and tucked inside this earthen vessel.

As I look into the mirror may I take the time today and every day to remember to find a reason, a damn good reason, why I should celebrate my life, if only because it may be my last day to remember.
