April 2010 ~ The Beauty of Yes & No

May 4, 2010

Take a look around you and see if you can tell the difference between the people who live their lives in the power of yes or the power of no. Is there really that much of a difference between the two worlds or are there more similarities that may be unknown, unseen, or just simply unrecognized by the common person.

I have been blessed, as I would hope you have been, to meet many different types of people in my life ~ wealthy, homeless, healthy or dying, alone, united by family, foreign or native. There are so many variations of what we call the human experience and each person has a story to tell, and sometimes, others may listen to their travails and wisdom, their plights and turmoils, their pains and defeats as well as their successes and accomplishments. What motivated each one of us to finish the race that we began, one of many that we must run during this lifetime? Why are some people graced by talents that people pay for willingly today while others bypass the art of a genius yet do not pay the price of admission to view their works until centuries after the artist has passed? Why are some people able to continue onward while others fall by the wayside and lose their way and no longer are able to stand in their own shadow, let alone, stand in the light of their own truth?

For some people their steps through life are like walking on the sand ~ each day is a step that may take more effort than if they were walking on a sidewalk or strolling on the grass. Life seems harder for these people, or so it may seem, but somehow they just keep plodding along. Do you ever wonder what makes that person tick? What propels them each day to get out of bed and to face hearing the potential outcome of a medical diagnosis, or what is left behind in the battles of a divorce, or what hope can be given to a mother who has lost her only child because of a careless act of another?

I fondly recall hearing and reflect upon the childhood story of “The Little Engine That Could.” There was a stranded train of freight cars that needed a large strong engine to take it over the rugged and mountainous terrain and asked nearby engines to assist due to the inability to carry out its’ task, alone. All the other engines refused to help and offered various excuses that seemed valid, or perhaps, convenient at the time.

Standing in the train yard was a small blue engine awaiting its next assignment and, when asked to help the stranded train, the little engine stepped forth and, recognizing that it was going to be a challenge, began to chant a “mantra” ~ I think I can, I think I can, I think I can. As the little engine puffed its way up the mountain it began to slow down though it bravely continued to lead the freight train up and over and down the other side of the mountain. Shortly after the little engine tackled the challenge it began to chant “I thought I could, I thought I could, I thought I could.”

We, as readers and observers in our lives, are able to view the larger "engines" that were left on the other side of the mountain and watched the little engine accomplish something that they knew or believed they could not or would not do? Only one engine, and the smallest one at that, went against the odds, as well as the expectation of the others. And notice that once the little engine started down the mountain it most likely was no longer in the sites of the others that were left behind in the freight yard. Another perspective had been gained and, in some ways you could say that perhaps some other perspectives were now left behind, or possibly “lost.”

In this short story, we can see ourselves as others see us, or in some ways as we see ourselves ~ do we see the yes’s in our lives or do we live in the shadows of the no’s of ourselves or those of others?

When we ring true in our own beauty, it may be a quiet place that no one ever sees or may never have known.
Does that limit you to what you can experience even though it may mean you will fail, or slow down, or be ridiculed by others?

Do you say yes and mean no?

Do you hear yes and not move forward?

Do you want others to know that your yes’s mean yes and your no’s mean no?

Do you want to know what it means to live?

What motto or mantra are you repeating everyday in your life ~ is it one that works for you now and where you are and want to be in your life now?

I think I can,
I thought I could,
I know I did…

see my beauty in finding and living in the truth of my own answers.
